KUNEKUNE PIGS

Kunekune pigs are a small breed of pig originally from New Zealand and kept by the Māori natives. Kunekunes are grazers, not foragers like most pigs, and therefore, can live on grass alone. They were named Kunekune (pronounced cooney cooney) which means “fat and round” in Māori.   They were used as a meat & lard pigs and were allowed to roam freely.

The Kunekune pig were imported directly from New Zealand to the United States around 1995, but the population in the United States did not turn around until around 2005 where another breeder imported Kunekunes from Great Britain which helped diversify the gene pool. They are hairy, and range in colors from black & white to ginger, cream, gold, tricolor and everything in between. They have an unusual feature – fleshy tassels on the side of their faces called piri piri; not all have them, but they are common among the breeds.

Kunekune pigs are known for their extremely laid back, docile, friendly nature and they love human company and because of their short snouts don't root the ground like long nose pigs.  Kunekune pigs are easy to manage and can become addictive.

The Kunekune pig is a standardized breed, which means registered Kunekunes are enrolled in a herd book and should be mated to conform to a written standard.  The Kunekune should have a wide head with a dished face, short snout which becomes more upturned with maturity, My Kunekune pigs are all DNA tested and all are registered with the American Kunekune Pig Society (AKKPS) and some are registered with the American Kunekune Pig Registry (AKPR), recently changing their name to American Kunekune Pig Association, INC.  I sell my piglets, and some breeding pairs.

IDAHO PASTURE PIGS, (IPP)

Idaho Pasture Pigs (IPP) are known for pretty much the same thing that Kunekune pigs are known for, after all they were created from Kunekune DNA. Idaho Pasture Pigs are a newer breed of pig specifically designed to grow and mature at a faster rate than the Kunekune pigs.  IPP’s are a combination of the original Duroc, old Berkshire, and Kunekune breeds.  The founder of the IPP’s spent years perfecting the combination to get a fast growing, friendly, and most importantly GRAZING meat pig.

Idaho Pasture Pigs come in a variety of colors including black/white, ginger, tri-colored, cream, and any combination of these colors. The IPP has been making waves in pastures, becoming the most versatile breed that can be raised by both the small family homesteads and larger farms right next to cattle & goats. These fascinating pigs grow faster & larger than the true historically known pasture pigs, the Kunekunes and can maintain healthy vibrant pastures when rotationally grazed. The notable Kunekune upturned snout discourages rooting and promotes above ground foraging and grazing behavior.

Idaho Pasture Pigs are very gentle natured and have great personalitiesThey grow and mature faster than Kunekune pigsand eat less grain than the average meat hogThey are smaller than traditional pigs, with sows weighing 250–350 pounds and boars weighing 350–450 pounds.

We are just this year transitioning to the IPP due to all the excellent reasons listed in these paragraphs.  Faster growth rate, less feed, friendly pigs, more grazing, more meat and bacon!!  We are extremely excited to be able to provide the best quality in terms of breed stock and pork. to our customers.    We will sell registered breeding pigs, piglets and barrows (for meat.)  For additional information please email or call.

13 He waters the mountains from His upper chambers; The earth is satisfied with the fruit of His works. 14 He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, And vegetation for the labor of man, so that he may bring forth food from the earth, 15 And wine which makes man's heart glad, So that he may make his face glisten with oil, And food which sustains man's heart.… Psalm 104:13-15
